The Bible says in Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." This means that because you are a sinner, you are unable to have a relationship with a holy God who can not tolerate sin. There are not enough good deeds you can do to make up for your sinful nature. Even one lie separates you from God. A holy, righteous, and just God cannot let sin go unpunished.
In the Bible we are told in Romans 6:23 "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." This describes the penalty for your sin as the death you know you will face one day. It could be today, it could be 20 years from now, but you will pay that price for your sin. You can't escape it on your own. Fortunately, the verse continues to describe the remedy of eternal life. This life is provided through Jesus, our Savior if we believe in Him.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The Bible says in Romans 5:8 "But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Because of God's love for you and His desire to have relationship with you, He sent His only Son, the sinless sacrifice Jesus Christ, to die for your sin. His death on the cross when He had done no wrong, paved the way for you to have a relationship with God. It was God's love that held Jesus on that shameful cross until He had finished the work of atonement for your sin, to the glory of God.
Romans 10:9-10 and verse 13 says, "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." It is as simple as that. There is No Deed you can do to save yourself. You can only be saved by calling on the name of the Lord and asking for forgiveness for your sin. You are then saved by God's grace! Grace is God's kindness to us when we deserve punishment. Romans 11:6 says "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace." If there were requirements on our part for salvation, then God's grace would not play a role in our salvation. We can not be good enough to cover our sin. We can not go to church enough, or help the poor enough, or do good works enough. Only through repentance of our sin as we call on the Lord for forgiveness will He save us on His own power.
Romans 4:5 says "To him that...believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." When you have faith in Jesus Christ you create a path to God. Before your salvation, when God looked on you, He saw your sin and it separates you from Him. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, your sin is no longer visible through the blood of Jesus that is covering it up. This allows you to have a relationship with God. He tells us in Psalms 103:12 that "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us."
When you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, He sends you His Holy Spirit to guide your life, to comfort you, and to help you grow in your new spiritual walk. As a new Christian, you will want to join a local church so that you can be encouraged each week by other believers who are trying to navigate their spiritual walk as well. Churches that preach the good news of Jesus Christ in the Bible will also help you grow spiritually as you learn more about Him. If you are in the area, we would love to be that Church for you. We hope you will visit us and find out more about what life as a follower of Christ looks like!
